Looking after the security of your home

  1. Make sure your home is fully secure when you leave it. Always lock doors and windows. If you don’t and you are broken into, your insurer might not pay out.
  2. Keys on shelves or on tables near the front door can be grabbed through the letterbox. Keep them out of reach.
  3. Alarm systems can help protect your home. Make sure they’re always switched on when you’re out.
  4. Fit window locks if you don’t have them already, especially for windows on the lower floors.
  5. Keys hidden outside, are never hidden from burglars, so rather leave them with a neighbour or friend.
  6. Side gates can prevent easy access to the back of the house, where burglars can’t be seen from the street. External lighting can also deter them.
  7. Remember garden sheds can be a source of tools for breaking into the house, so keep them locked.
  8. Always make sure that your insurance continues to fit your needs, and that you have detailed any specific high value items.
  9. In the unfortunate event of being burgled, call the police immediately on 999. Don’t touch anything as you could damage or destroy evidence.
  10. Victim Support can offer help and advice on 0808 168 9111.

For your protection telephone calls will be recorded and may be monitored.
